Ancient scraping technique for detoxification and rejuvenation of skin and muscles.
Gua Sha
The therapy Gua Sha (guā shā, 刮痧) is an ancient technique of Asian medicine, applied to unblock the flow of energy and blood, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the body’s natural defenses.
The word “gua” means “scraping” and “sha” refers to the redness that appears on the skin after the treatment, a sign of activated circulation. Using special tools made from jade, stone, or horn, gentle yet firm pressure is applied over the muscles and meridians, usually on the back, neck, shoulders, or face.
At San Cai, Gua Sha is used:
- for musculoskeletal tension (e.g. neck pain, back stiffness)
- for headaches and migraines
- for menstrual pain or digestive issues
- for body detoxification
- for aesthetic purposes on the face (facial gua sha)
The session lasts about 30 minutes and is usually performed over oil or in combination with other treatments, such as massage or acupuncture. It is not painful but may leave mild redness that fades within 1–2 days.
